Monday, 26 July 2010 13:55 Under the concept of Community Sustainable Agriculture (CSA), which has had immeasurable success in America, roughly 150 allotments will be opening in August of this year. Located within walking distance of Skerries, on the Golf Links Road, over 130 people have signed up to date. The sub-committee, namely Mary Marsden, Barry Brady and Ale Nicolleau have been meeting with Tom Hussey of the Council since February of this year. Chairperson of the Gardening and Growing Committee Mary Marsden told the County Leader, “ The aim of the project is to encourage and give people in Skerries the opportunity to grow their own vegetables. By learning to grow their own vegetables these skills which have been inherent in this area for generations would be retained, ‘food miles’ would be vastly reduced and this initiative is one important step towards transforming the Community in Skerries into a resilient community for the future when oil prices rise and importing vegetables will be too expensive for the average family”. The scheme itself has received great support from the Council and also the local organisation Sustainable Skerries. The concept has also received some funding from An Táisce, and also the Council have provided funds for the access and setting up of the allotments. “Currently we are still waiting for the new gateway to be opened in the boundary wall on to the public road, we are also waiting for a limited amount of parking to be provided. The land also needs to be ploughed and rotavated before we can move in. We hope to be in a position to get in to the site before the end of July.” concluded Mary. |
