Monday, 08 March 2010 15:53 River Valley Residents Association has just completed new renovations to River Valley Community Centre that will re-light the River Valley Youth Club. The renovations that were completed last week will see three new rooms decked out with a table tennis table, pool tables, an air hockey table, basketball hoops, darts, a television and DVD player and a fuss ball table. The new initiative has been partially funded by the County Council along with the resident associations’ own funds. Speaking to the County Leader, Secretary of the Residents Association Arthur Browne said, “Many, many years ago there was a River Valley Youth Club, but there hasn’t been one in years. The Residents committee made a promise to provide youth facilities for the community . We’ve lost so many kids over the years to a lack of facilities so now we can say here, this is for you, it’s up to you now to use it and look after it. There are other things out there like headshops and drink that can tempt kids today but this facility can provide a better way to nurture the kids and give them a new alternative”. Arthur continued, “We got grant aid from the Council and used our own funds also. Up until about two or three years ago, the residents association has been left on its own, but then we saw there are support structures and funding out there for us and so we said that we should be accessing them”. The target age for the youth club is 10-16 years and plans are underway to split the groups into categories and have them use the facilities on different nights, once registration has been completed.
