Monday, 08 March 2010 15:34 A well attended public meeting was held in St. Andrew’s Parish Centre, Malahide recently, entitled ‘Future proofing Malahide’. The presentation was made by Professor John Sweeney, an internationally renowned author and recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. He is Professor of Geography at NUI Maynooth and Ireland’s foremost expert on climate change. Professor Sweeney explained the changes that Malahide can expect over the next two hundred years as a result of global warming. Estuaries and sand dunes will be radically altered beyond recognition. He bemoaned the failure of the Copenhagen Conference and criticised the self serving motives of the big players in the fight against global warming. “People often mistake climate and weather. In a particularly harsh winter like we have experienced, it is difficult to visualise global warming. However, he stressed that radical change is needed immediately to avert further catastrophe. |
