Last year saw 101 employees retired from the Council’s 1,400 staff, the highest out of three of the four local authorities in Dublin, the County Leader has learned. Of the 101 retirees, the highest number retired from the water services department where 27 people put a stop to their service with the County Council.A total of 34 people retired from the Transportation department and the Community, Recreation and Amenities department, with another 13 retiring from the Environment department and 17 from a combination of  IT / Law / Architects / HR / Corporate Services. The County Council’s figure is up on that compared to the similarly sized Dublin South County Council who had 74 of their employees retire in 2009. Of the 74 retirees, 11 were voluntary or early retirement and five from the incentivised early retirement scheme. Meanwhile, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown had 70 members of staff retire in 2009 of which  28 were under voluntary redundancy and 12 were under the Incentivised Scheme of Early Retirement.

With almost  five times the number of employees than the County Council in the North County, Dublin City Council had the highest number of retirees at 435 of which 66 on the incentivised retirement scheme.

According to the Council, due to the embargo on public sector employment, none of the posts will be filled anytime soon and while locals may be concerned that the number of unfilled vacancies at the Council may have an affect on services, the Council has said, “We are constantly reviewing how we provide our services based on the resources we have”.
