Monday, 08 March 2010 15:12 Grow It Yourself Ireland (GIY), the countrywide organic food growers’ network, launched its first local campaign in front of over 100 new eager members in Council Hall, Swords, recently. GIY Swords champion and founder, Mick Kelly, invited new members to embrace organic food growing in their area. Sean Corrigan of GIY Ireland introduced the launch to over 100 new members with a talk on GIY’s latest exiting initiatives across the country. Guest speakers on the night included Mayor, Ciaran Byrne, who greeted welcomed guests and thanked GIY leaders for their future initiatives in Swords, wishing them the “best of luck for the future of GIY Ireland.” Nutritionist and GIY member, Gaye Godkin, gave an engaging talk on the health benefits of organic food in the diet, and GIY Balbriggan member, Sean Corrigan gave newcomers some exiting top tips on how to grow your own. He said, “Things are looking great for GIY, by the end of the week we will reach over 60 groups across the country, by the time the growing season comes, there will be over a 100 groups across the country.” Local TD, Trevor Sargent also spared time, despite a hectic time in politics following his resignation as Minister for Food and Horticulture, to share some thoughts on GIY’s exciting presence in North County area. He noted that this area “is the healthiest, largest, most vibrant area of GIY activity in the country and that is something to be very proud of. It certainly makes me very proud to be on North County land and be able to say that tonight” |
