Malahide lad, Gavin Moynihan seems destined for a glittering golfing career. Gavin, aged 17 is a student at Pobal Scoil Íosa in Malahide, and is heading off to Texas to play in the World Junior Golf Championship. Gavin is a member of the Island Golf Club, having previously played at Donabate Golf Club and plays off an incredible plus two handicap. He is very excited about his upcoming trip to Texas. He told the County Leader: “This competition is by invitation only and I am the only European invited to play. I played in Sawgrass in Florida last September and finished in third place, which resulted in me being invited back again by the American Junior Golfing Association.” The three day event will take place between 18th and 20th of February, but that is not all of Gavin’s exotic travels for the year. “A few weeks later, I will travel to China to take part in the World final of the Nick Faldo Series at Mission Hills Golf Club. My ambition is to go professional and there are a number of tournaments in the pipeline.” Gavin practises every weekend and after school on Wednesdays. He is very aware of the task facing him in Texas. “I will be up against some of the best Juniors in the world and my aim is to finish in the top ten. I generally finish highly in competitions, so you never know what might happen,” said a hopeful Gavin.
