Denis Barry, President of St Finian’s Conference of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) in River Valley, Swords has issued an appeal for help for families in need this Christmas.
He said: “Christmas is the busiest time of the year for SVP and it’s the time when the greatest demand is made on us. The people who don’t have anything are really impacted at Christmas time and we could say that they are the forgotten element of our society. People talk about the economy improving, but it’s only for some and it doesn’t seep down to the bottom. The people we are dealing with are at the bottom unfortunately.”
“As always, donations, toys, money and new clothing are always welcome at SVP and as Phyllis Barry, Denis’s wife, who is secretary of the local SVP conference said: “We find that families that are working, but on very low wages are really vulnerable and may not get help from social welfare. They are making every effort to work, but may end up needing our help.”
Denis said: “One of the things we have been discussing recently is about families who have sponsoring families who have not. This would include them coming into a family with young children and making sure they are looked after for Christmas. They don’t have to do it on their own, they could include their extended families and relations, by pooling their resources and making it a very happy Christmas for one family that don’t have anything.
“Families have already been doing this and it has worked very well and the good thing is that the family who receives it doesn’t know who the family who are the givers and vice versa. There’s total confidentiality and that’s the secret of its success. Imagine the sight of children waking up on Christmas morning to be greeted by presents. To a family with children, that would be wonderful.”
He appealed to families that are in the position to sponsor families in need to contact him at the Parish Office in River Valley at 01-8409043.
