A cheque presentation to the amount of \492 was presented to Balbriggan Meals on Wheels by Club Óige Feachtas Baile Brigín at the Meals on Wheels premises on Hampton Street in the town last week. Loretta Ni Churraiglin is the manager of Club Óige Feachtas Baile Brigín and she explained to the County Leader about the organisation. “Feachtas is an Irish language youth organisation and we run clubs through the medium of Irish throughout Dublin. We have a new club here in Balbriggan, which started last September.
What’s very important about the club is that it is the young people’s club.” “There was a competition that Foróige ran called a Youth Citizenship Award and Club Óige Feachtas Baile Brigín entered the competition. The way that it worked was that the club had to do something for the community. Feachtas came up with the idea of helping Meals on Wheels in Balbriggan, so they sat down with them to find out exactly what they wanted.
They discovered that funding was a major issue and the members went to look for sponsorship. Silverhills Food in Monaghan sponsored them to the tune of E250 and they also received funding from businesses in the community, as well as selling raffle tickets in school. We’re very proud of them,” said Loretta. Eoghan O’Ceallacháin, founder member of Balbriggan Meals on Wheels and fluent Irish speaker was very impressed with the efforts and thoughtfulness of the group and he praised them for their civic responsibility as he addressed them in Irish. Members of Feachtas then entertained staff of Meals on Wheels with some beautiful singing, which was appreciated by all. Brendan Ingoldsby, Chairman of Balbriggan Meals on Wheels said, “We are very grateful for this donation. Meals on Wheels is dependent on the generosity of the community of Balbriggan to keep our services going and we are delighted to accept this donation,” he said. Feachtas meets every Tuesday evening in the sports hall at Gaelscoil Baile Brigín.
