Lara Maritz, a 16 year-old Loreto Secondary School Balbriggan student, has been picked on the Irish Women’s Cricket squad for their summer tour. Born in South Africa and moving to Ireland in 2005, Lara is proud to be Irish- South African. She has been an active cricket player since joining The Hills Cricket Club at age nine. She then moved to Malahide Cricket Club in 2015 and is playing on their first team.
Having just returned from a three month cricket exchange programme in South Africa with her twin sister, Tess where they attended school, they were mentored by coaches and received valuable training to hone their cricket skills, while getting to visit their brother Juvan who is a coach at the South African School, Menlo Park.
Soon after her return, the talented Lara received the news that she was picked for the Ireland Women Cricket Squad 2017 and at only 16 years old.
The cricket squad will tour the UAE and South Africa in April / May 2017 where they will face hosts South Africa, Zimbabwe and India in the Quadrangular tournament, but before then they will warm up with three 50 over matches against an England XI in the UAE.
With this year’s team featuring a number of North County Dublin girls it could be one to watch for Malahide Cricket club and the Hills Cricket club, where the girls are members .
