Balbriggan & District Historical Society began their new year with a new Chairperson, Anne Collins and a new member of the committee, Brian Kavanagh.

Their first event of 2017 is a quiz upstairs in The Milestone Inn, Balbriggan on Thursday, 23rd March at 8pm. Come along and test your wits against your neighbours and friends – and have a good night out. Teams of 4 cost €40 per team.

They have confirmed the speakers for their first three talks which will be held as usual on the last Wednesday of the month in the Town Hall at 8pm: On Wednesday, 29th March, Jim Walsh will speak about “Balbriggan Carnegie Free Library – Its design construction and development since 1905.”
On Wednesday, 26th April, Brian Arnold’ talk will be “Thomas Ashe – The Revolutionary Teacher.” while on Wednesday, 31st May, Padraig Yeates will speak on The Russian Revolution, Easter 1916 and Irish Labour History .

On Wednesday, 29th March the County Council will be hosting a showcase of Historical Societies in County Hall, Swords. This clashes with Jim’s Walsh’s talk on the night, but Balbriggan will have a stand there featuring some archive photographs. A photographic exhibition will be launched on the night and will run until 7th April, so there will be plenty of time to call in and view it after the opening.
