Balbriggan resident, Liz Bourke is in the process of organising an LGBTQ+ book club in association with Balbriggan Library. The book club meets on the last Thursday of every month between 6.30pm and 7.30pm in Balbriggan Library.
Liz explained to the County Leader, “I couldn’t find a local LGBTQ+ book club, so I decided to start one. Apparently this is the first LGBTQ+ book club to operate in Fingal County Library premises. They are setting up the room and they’ve added us to their mailing list. The book club will meet once a month. When I was younger, I could’ve really used more LGBTQ+ visibility locally, and I want to help build the sense of community I wish I’d had,” she said.
“The book club is primarily aimed at LGBTQ+ people, but it’s open to everyone who likes to read. Anyone who’s interested in the books we’re reading is welcome to come along, as long as they understand that homophobia and transphobia aren’t welcome. So far, I have had some interest in the project, and Assumpta at Balbriggan library has been very helpful,” said Liz.
The next meeting of the Balbriggan LGBTQ+ book club will take place on Thursday 23rd February at 6.30pm. The book for discussion is Madeline Miller’s award-winning ‘The Song of Achilles’ (Bloomsbury, 2012).
