New Councillor Hits The Ground Running

Cllr. Tom O'LearyCllr. Tom O'Leary

Former Fine Gael County Councillor, Tom O’Leary has been co-opted on to Fingal County Council, as a replacement for his party colleague, JP Browne who vacated his seat earlier this year due to the pressure of business. When Browne resigned his position, a vacancy was created on the Council. The local Fine Gael committee called a co-option conference and O’Leary was selected.
O’Leary, who hails from Skerries will represent residents in the Balbriggan Electoral Area, is one of the most experienced local councillors and he certainly is not prepared to let the grass grow under his feet. He spoke to the County Leader about some very ambitious plans he has for the area.
He said, “I’m delighted to be back and to have the opportunity to serve the people of Skerries particularly, but also the Balbriggan entire electoral area. The towns in the region are all growing at a great rate, with lots of activity,” he said. O’Leary believes there is a great need for job opportunities and inward investment , particularly in Balbriggan. “There are 7,000 pupils in schools in Balbriggan, both primary and secondary who will all need jobs very soon and we need to act now to land a big name employer to Balbriggan. There are hundreds of acres zoned in Balbriggan for high end technology industry, as well as general industry. The IDA told me that they are looking at peripheral areas of Dublin, like Balbriggan, which is designated as a spatial growth area. I intend to work with Balbriggan Chamber and any other Chamber for that matter to ensure that jobs are created here in the North County,” he said. His selection was welcomed by party colleagues in the area. Senator James Reilly said, “I’m delighted to see Tom back in the Council. He is one of the most experienced councillors serving on Fingal County Council and this is excellent news for people living in the area,” he said.
Alan Farrell TD said, “I would like to extend my congratulations to Tom O’Leary, who will now take his seat as a councillor on Fingal County Council, following his selection at a co-option convention to replace John Paul Browne. I offer my best wishes to Tom in his role as a councillor and I look forward to working with him to ensure the every community in the North County is well represented at both the national and local level.”
