The Community and Council Awards 2016 presented by IPB Insurance took place last week and Donabate Portrane Community and Leisure Centre won the accolade of Local Sports Club of the Year.
The centre was designed to create a focal point for all community, sports and leisure users. Originally designed in 1999 and built in 2002, it incorporated a bar and function room, modern Gym and sports hall. In 2005, a decision was made to close the bar area and develop a coffee shop. In 2008 the centre facilitated the new Donabate Community College while its build took place. This meant the centre was restructured and developed to accommodate up to 300 students and staff in the first floor. The coffee shop was relocated as was the Montessori facility. In 2014 another refurbishment took place to facilitate Donabate Library joining the centre, which has only added to the community needs.
Over years with significant redevelopment and investment, Donabate Portrane Community & Leisure Centre has achieved it primary objective which is to “meet the ever changing needs of the community it serves.” Evidence shows that the centre is needed more now than it was in 2001 with the ever changing expanding population. The County Leader spoke to Jacinta Lowndes Manager of the leisure centre who said: “ It is such a great thing for the centre. Obviously we are all delighted. “
She went on to say: “The club is community and leisure based so endeavours to serve the needs of everyone from 0-100+ years. Facilities include, gym which is wheelchair accessible, sports hall, all weather pitch, sauna & steam room, changing facilities, dance studios, Library Montessori & Coffee shop. We have worked with Community Department of Fingal County Council to encourage all ages to use our facilities. Most recently, Active Age for All has promoted a range of activities to over 50’s to participate in Yoga, Tai Chi, exercise classes, and outdoor football to name but a few.” She concluded by saying: “Everyone at Donabate Portrane Community Centre is delighted at winning Local Sports Club of the Year at the LAMA Awards. It’s wonderful recognition for our centre, the staff and volunteers and most of all our community and all the work we do to bring sport and leisure activities to everyone.”
