Swords Pals Off To Special Olympics

Two young Swords lads are in the process of departing to Los Angeles to compete in the Special Olympics there later this month.
While this is a great distinction for the boys, the fact that both of them come from the same estate, Hawthorn Park in Swords is truly remarkable. Emmet Daly (19) and Billy Kane (15) are keen as mustard to get to Los Angeles and don the green jersey and represent their country with pride. Emmet is a key member of the 5-a-side football team, where he is expected to make a big impact. He told the County Leader that his idol is Republic of Ireland star, Robbie Keane. Indeed Emmet is pictured on the official leaflet of Special Olympics Ireland with Robbie Keane and his wife Claudine, which appears at bus stops around the city. “I just can’t wait to play for Ireland and I hope to win a gold medal and get player of the tournament,” said Emmet.
Billy will represent Ireland in gymnastics and like Emmet, he is expecting to do well, as he is an accomplished gymnast. His proud mother, Geraldine said that Billy will perform six disciplines at the games. These include the parallel bars, the horizontal bars, the rings, floor exercise, the vaults and the pommel horse. Billy just loves gymnastics and he is doing it since he was six years old. Like Emmet, Billy, who has represented Ireland before is extremely proud to be representing Ireland again. Geraldine said that she is very proud of Billy and said that family members and friends of both Billy and Emmet are set to make the journey to Los Angeles to cheer on the lads. A total of 88 athletes will compete for Ireland,
and hopefully the two Swords lads will represent their country with distinction and return home with medals. The games start on 25th July.
