There was great excitement in the North County last week as Sporting Fingal F.Cbecame the first League of Ireland club in the country to launch a Special Olympics team. The newly founded team will wear the Sporting Fingal strip and play in the National Special Olympics Football League. Conan Byrne, Community Development Manager with Sporting Fingal F.C, as well as a valued member of the senior team, played a vital role in developing the new team along with Robbie Corr. “From day one, Sporting Fingal has set out to become a club like no other, with the main emphasis on the Community and we are delighted, that as a club only in existence one year, that we are the first League of Ireland club to undertake a Special Olympics Team,” he said. The launch was attended by Irish senior international Kevin Kilbane who described it as a “great initiative” and expressed his hope that Sporting Fingal’s lead would “set the example for more clubs to follow this positive development.” Conan Byrne claims the club will continue to focus and aim to develop in the community. “It took a lot of hard work from a lot of different people to make this happen but we were determined that we would make it come about and thankfully it has. We will continue to work with the local community groups, schools and clubs because I said before, the main emphasis is on Community,” he said.
