Swords Celtic FC held an under 9’s eight-a-side tournament just after Christmas. The ‘Kempis Cup’ tournament was held at the club’s all weather facility in Balheary on December 27th and 28th and the players were blessed with ideal weather! Eight teams took part in the thrilling tournament which created a really enjoyable feast of football. The teams that took part were Swords Celtic, St. Kevin’s, Malahide, Cabinteely, Dunshaughlin, Templeogue and Drogheda. All the teams dived into the competition with gusto but it was soon down to St. Kevin’s and Swords Celtic to entertain the crowds in the final. Each team fighting for the winning spot the match turned out to be a thriller! Amid the cheers and roars of everyone on the sidelines it was Swords Celtic that scored first, thanks to some impressive moves by Oisín McCarthy, Aaron Molloy and a lovely finish by Jason Condon. But not to be outdone St. Kevin’s rallied and equalised only five minutes later. But next up was a killer blow courtesy of Swords Celtic. No sooner was the ball placed on the half-way line following St. Kevins’ goal when Evan Casey stepped up to the mark. The nine year old sent the ball from the spot over the stunned Kevins’ keeper and crashing into the net. Spectacular was the only word to describe it! It was 2-1 to Celtic and the ref blew the whistle for half-time.
The second half was equally exciting with some brilliant individual play from both sides. Then with six minutes to go Celtic midfielder Aaron Molloy got a great pass from Andrew Bermingham and sent the ball sailing into Kevins’ net, bending it like Beckham from 25 yards out. It rounded off a great day for Swords Celtic, their managers, coaches, supporters, families and friends.
The club would like to say a big thanks to Conan Byrne from Sporting Fingal who acted as referee, as well as Paul Connolly and Eddie D’Arcy. To the sponsors of the tournament, Kempis, and to Sandra, Olivia and Jackie for all the sandwiches! The club would finally like to extend a big thanks to all those who made it a great sporting occasion!
